If you’ve ever found yourself in a situation where your carefully styled outfit is entirely covered up by a winter coat, we may have a surprising style secret that can resolve this recurring comfort vs. style dilemma. One silent trend that has been hitting the streets over the past few seasons has been the idea of wearing a coat as a dress. Our favorite interpretation of this phenomenon is Leelee Sobieski’s styling of her beautiful, red Dior coat during Paris fashion week. Wearing only a metal cinched belt and nude pumps as accessories, she carried herself in a classy, lady-like demeanor.

In our own interpretation of the coatdress trend, we use a flirty red coat whose attached belt creates a figure-flaunting cinch at the waist. Adding some matching accessories is often key to making it look more like a planned outfit rather than any thrown-on coat. In our case, we incorporated gloves and heeled boots to add an extra level of dressiness into the look. The end result had us signing along to Anna Dello Russo’s over-the-top promotional H&M video: Lesson # 8 wear a coat as a dress.
